Grace Llewellyn, author of The
Teenage Liberation Handbook is the
founder of the Not Back to School Camp, which she describes as
"an exuberant and inspiring week-long camp for unschooled
teenagers" age 13 to 18. The camp meets annually, with
sessions near Eugene, Oregon, in late August and early September.
A third session, in West Virginia, was added as of fall 2002.
The camp sessions, now in their eighth year, offer sports, a
wide variety of workshops and other unschooled activities, and
vegetarian meals. The maximum number of campers is about 105 in
Oregon, and 115 in West Virginia. NBTSC is a non-denominational,
non-religious camp that welcomes diversity. Some work-trade
positions and scholarships are available.
Camp dates for 2003:
- Session 1, August 25-September 2, Oregon
- Session 2, September 4-11, Oregon
- Session 3, September 25-October 2, West Virginia
There is an increase in registration fees after March 18.
The NBTSC website includes the complete text of the 2003 camp
brochure, registration forms, testimonials, and other basic
information. The NBTSC
Community site was created by
ex-campers, and other camper-related sites are listed here.
